PPE for Painters and Drywallers in Canada: Why an N95 Is Not Enough (2026)
Painting and drywall finishing produce two completely different airborne hazards, and they need two completely different pieces of equipment. Dust needs a particulate filter. Paint and solvent vapour needs an organic vapour cartridge. A filter does nothing against vapour, and a cartridge does nothing against dust.
The more uncomfortable finding is what most drywallers are actually wearing. An N95 is not sufficient for drywall joint compound, because that compound frequently contains crystalline silica. For that hazard the step up is a P100 filter on a reusable half mask.
What drywall sanding actually puts in the air
WorkSafeBC guidance on drywall is direct: the largest risk is dust and silica exposure from sanding. Over time that dust can cause upper respiratory problems similar to asthma, and where silica is present workers face an increased risk of silicosis and lung cancer.
Drywallers typically have the most exposure, but the dust does not respect trade boundaries. Other workers nearby are affected too, which makes this a site scheduling question as much as a personal protection one.
Two additional hazards apply to renovation work specifically. Old drywall mud and some gypsum boards can contain asbestos, and cutting asbestos-containing board or mud without proper controls releases fibres into the air. Some drywall imported from China between 2001 and 2007 also contains sulfur compounds.
If asbestos is suspected, this stops being a respirator question. It requires qualified assessment and proper abatement procedures under your provincial requirements, not a better mask. Do not sand or cut suspect material and then reason about filtration afterward.
The N95 problem
N95 filtering facepieces are ubiquitous on drywall jobs because they are cheap, disposable and comfortable. They filter 95 percent of non-oil particulate, which is genuinely useful for a lot of work.
Drywall joint compound is not that work. Because it frequently contains crystalline silica, the appropriate protection steps up to a P100 filter on a reusable elastomeric respirator, which filters 99.97 percent of airborne particles and seals considerably better than a disposable.
The seal is half the reason. A disposable facepiece that has been pulled on and off through a shift, worn under safety glasses, or fitted to a face it was never fit tested against is delivering less than its rating. Filters and cartridges are not interchangeable
This is the distinction that catches painters, and it is worth stating as a rule.
Dust, including silica, concrete, drywall and wood, calls for a particulate filter. Paint, solvents and coatings release vapour, which calls for an organic vapour cartridge. An unknown, confined or oxygen-deficient atmosphere calls for supplied air and nothing less.
A painter spraying solvent-based coatings while wearing a dust mask is, for practical purposes, unprotected against the hazard that matters. The particulate filter captures the paint mist, which is why it feels like it is working, while the vapour passes through untouched.
Paint spraying frequently produces both at once, which is why IHSA guidance on respiratory protection notes that mist and vapours may both be present from paint spraying. A combination organic vapour P100 cartridge addresses both on one facepiece.
Cartridges fail differently from filters, and the difference is dangerous. A clogging filter makes breathing harder, which tells you something has changed. A saturated cartridge simply stops working, and depending on the substance you may get no warning at all. Replace on a schedule following the manufacturer's recommendations rather than waiting to smell something.

A respirator is the last control, not the first
WorkSafeBC is explicit that personal protective equipment is the least effective control, and that when it is used there must always be at least one other control in place as well. That framing is worth taking seriously rather than treating as boilerplate.
The first question the same guidance asks is whether work practices can reduce the need to sand at all. Better joint compound application, wet sanding methods, vacuum-assisted sanders and pole sanders with dust collection all reduce the dust before anyone puts a mask on.
Cleanup matters as much as the sanding. Keeping dust to a minimum when cleaning the jobsite prevents settled dust being re-suspended, which is how a worker who was not sanding ends up with the exposure. Sweeping dry is the worst option available.
Ergonomics belongs in the same conversation. Training in handling and lifting drywall panels reduces the musculoskeletal injuries that account for a large share of lost time in this trade, and no respirator addresses those.
Knees, and why this trade wrecks them
Drywall finishing and painting involve sustained kneeling on hard floors, and the damage accumulates so gradually that workers mistake it for normal end-of-day soreness for years.

Painters and drywallers work on finished and semi-finished floors, which changes the footwear priorities away from what a framing crew needs.
Weight matters more than aggressive tread, since the day involves climbing, kneeling, standing on planks and covering ground indoors rather than crossing broken terrain.
